Hi all,

Need some help with a RAM upgrade, I m currently running 2x8GB DDR3 1866Mhz non XMP and would like to upgrade to 2x8GB DDR3 OC 3000Mhz as per below motherboard spec,

DDR3 1066/1333/1600/1866*/2000*/2133*/2200*/2400*/2600*/2666*/2800*/3000*/3100*/3200*/3300*(*OC) MHz

But my CPU is a i7 4790K and the memory specs for that are:

DDR3-1333/1600, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.5V

From memory I did once run 1x8GB DDR3 RAM at 2666Mhz OC via XMP profile.

So aside from trying to learn how this aspect works (which is cool, help appreciated!), could anyone advise what RAM kit would be ok for this combination of CPU and motherboard?

CPU Intel i7 8700K @5Ghz Motherboard ROG Maximus Hero 10 RAM Corsair Vengeance 32GB 3600MHz

GPU MSI Gaming X 1080ti Case Thermaltake Core P3  Storage SSD Boot plus Samsung 960 Evo M.2 nvme storage

PSU Corsair RM750W Gold Display Asus ROG Strix XG32VQ 144Hz 1440p Cooling Corsair H100i V2

Keyboard Roccat Ryos MK FX Mouse Roccat Kone Aimo Audio MK3 Fostex T50RP + Schiit Magni 3 AMP and Modi 2 DAC

Anything above 1600 is technically an overclock, so it really comes down to how much money for faster memory, and how far you want to push the overclock.

ie: buy something at 2666 or above (given you got there before) - and its just price for increment above that to decide.   Anything you buy can always go slower if the OC doesnt take.

ok so I buy DDR3 1600 xmp ram and it should just work at the various stated speed, but does my CPU support 3000Mhz?

Sure, you want an upgrade... but why?

because 3000Mhz RAM performs better than 1866Mhz in certain situations that I find myself in playing some alpha games re min fps. And I play alot!

Not really going to change much over just getting your current kit and OCing it to, say, 2133 or 2400mhz. Besides, latencies are kind of a problem, and are generally more important (with Haswell) than raw clock.

I strongly suggest you skip this upgrade, it's not going to accomplish what you think it will.

I appreciate your advice, but my current 1866Mhz kit is not XMP from what I can tell so I can't overclock it.

Whilst there may be complications, it will achieve what I think - a contact of mine has tested different RAM speeds under different situations in the App we all play etc.

Any kit above 1333mhz is an OCed kit. If yours is rated for 1866, then it definitely has an xmp for such speeds.

But even if it didn't, though, you can OC your Ram regardless. Just like you would with a CPU, you tune voltage and frequencies to get better speeds, the only differeence being that you also have to worry a bit about the timings. And just like CPUs, RAM has a lot of headroom above of of what the factory rated it at.

With those in mind, I'll say this once again: do not waste money on a new kit.
