Choosing a CPU

I'm currently selecting parts for a new build. The build is mostly for video and photo rendering but I will be playing games especially BF4 on it.

Question is, with a CPU I've heard that the 2011 chip set will be more beneficial when it comes to rendering as it has more cores however it is rather expensive, would an i7 4770k render well or should I gather the extra cash?

The 4770K would do great, but the 2011 platforms allow for more and quad channel RAM.

The 2011s also allow for future upgrades. The 4770K is the end of the line.

Yeah, the 4770K is good a good choice. Also if you something like 64GB of RAM(Most people don't need) or more GPUs.(3/4 SLI/Crossfire)

The 4770k will do you just fine. The difference you will feel as a casual video and photography editor will be minimal to none (I've owned both).

2011 is at the end of it's line as it will be replaced by 2011-3

I meant the performance point. A 3820 can be upgraded on the same platform, you can't go any higher than a 4C8T on 1150

It depends on what you're doing.

Unless you're working professionally and time is of the essence, it's not worth going 2011 over a much cheaper alternative and upgrade as you need to.

I study architecture so there's a lot of rendering of 3D models, but its not for work or anything so time isn't really that important.

Thanks for all your input :) will definitely stick to the original 4770k

Ehh, for rendering 3d models, you'd be better off with a 8350 unless you want a small form factor. It's cheaper that way and 3d programs love the 8 cores.

Broadwell will require a new 9-series chipset. Current thinking seems to be that existing Haswell will not be compatible, even though they both use LGA1150.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
