To put it lightly, my grandparents' 10 year old (cheap at he time) Vista machine has finally reached its end times, and I need recommendations on what cpu I should put in their new build.

I was planning on an i3 4xxx for the low cost and ddr3 (also low cost), but would like outside input on what I should put in it. It will probably run a 120 gb ssd and have 4 or 8 gb of RAM (POSSIBLY 2 different 4GB sticks depending on what I've got), and windows 10... Possibly 7 if my grandfather bitches enough. I want this computer to be able to run strong for thir browsing, scanning, dvd burning (yes they still do that..) and whatever other use they need for as long as the hardware can keep up or until the ssd fails.

I am not familiar with anything on the lower end of the CPU performance spectrum. please help

Would like to add that it would be most convenient if I could find the items still stocked at microcenter, will up to DDR4 based cpu if needed.

Will last a long time. You could replace the CPU with a Pentium if you think they don't need the i3.

Add whatever case you'd like, should add less than $50.

That optical drive doesn't have Blu Ray capabilities, but ones that do cost more than $50.

You can get Windows however you'd like, but you can get an OEM key on Kinguin for $20.

I fully understand that the new Pentium CPU's have HT, but the i3's higher clocks will help it last longer. The i3 also has a better iGPU.. but I don't think that matters much for a DVD burning machine. Nevertheless, I already said he should replace it if he thinks they don't need the i3. Depending on price constraints, I'd prefer to opt for the i3, because I have many younger cousins who like to play small games on the computer.

Yeah, the i3 will help with that.

If that's really all you want, go with a Socket AM1 system. Motherboards and CPUs for that are insanely cheap...
