Sooo, I'm looking into some future upgrades to my existing UnRaid box to hopefully cut back on some noise and reduce power consumption and maybe thermals on the discs...  The current system is built off of a 4-year old system that I had and decided to repurpose when I upgraded to a 6700k system for my daily driver and wanted a unified storage for my movies, music, books and GIS files.

One reason I'm looking at the Z270 board is for having the 8 integrated Sata III ports as opposed to the 6 on the existing system.  My big concern on the thermals is that I've noticed the HDD temps usually operate stably around 34 to 37 C when I'm not streaming or doing any serious load, but if I put a load on them, they begin to spike up towards 40 C.  I also want to get the 5th 4TB drive to add a second parity disc to the existing UnRaid setup (I'm currently in a 12 TB config with a single 4 TB parity and have about 6 TB used up).  As for the i3 and 1050, I'm looking at this as something that can probably run most of the video encoding and maybe setup a small VM on the side for about 150W less than what the current system runs.
