I don't mind the only thing I want backed up are the contacts can I save them to the SD card before using this installer without being rooted?

TO YOUR SD CARD

NOTHING WILL BE LOST WHEN YOU GO TO A CUSTOM ROM UNLESS YOU COMPLETELY DATA FORMAT

titanium backup will still have that file so relax, I am saying this from personal experience of doing this myself.

so root it using something like this

and for the second question, no, it's all based on your SD card
