Hey guys, my graphics card died yesterday

first my PC crashed and it smelled smoky. When i tried to restart the PC the lights on the motherboard and the graphics card lighted up for a second and then died again.

After i put the GPU out and in again, i tried starting it again. It didn't instantly shut down, but i noticed a little flame like light on the GPU. As i blew on it, to stop it, it started smoking.

My question is, if it is just a faulty video card or may it be a power supply issue or some other issues.

And my second question is, should i buy a gtx 1080 now or should i wait for the 11 GBit version

what graphics card? it could possibley be a power supply issue but it could also be a faulty card. as for getting a gtx 1080 ti or the gtx 1080 I would probably get the 1080ti if you can afford it as it is around 30% faster. what resolution are you playing on and what refresh-rate?

its a 980ti

The PC runs completely fine without the GPU now, that's why im not sure about the PSU

1080p 60Hz

at 1080p 60 hz a 1080ti would be pretty overkill. If you are looking to move up to a 1440p 144hz monitor, or planning to go 4k in very near future, then it might be a much better purchase, but I wouldn't spend that much on a card when the 1080 would be just as capable to overpower your monitor. I can't think of a single game that the 1080 would be inadequate at 1080p.

Gaming build:

CPU: i7-7700k (5.0ghz, 1.312v)

GPU(s): Asus Strix 1080ti OC (~2063mhz)

Memory: 32GB (4x8) DDR4 G.Skill TridentZ RGB 3000mhz

Motherboard: Asus Prime z270-AR

PSU: Seasonic Prime Titanium 850W

Cooler: Custom water loop (420mm rad + 360mm rad)

Case: Be quiet! Dark base pro 900 (silver)
Primary storage: Samsung 960 evo m.2 SSD (500gb)

Secondary storage: Samsung 850 evo SSD (250gb)

Server build:

OS: Ubuntu server 16.04 LTS (though will probably upgrade to 17.04 for better ryzen support)

CPU: Ryzen R7 1700x

Memory: Ballistix Sport LT 16GB

Motherboard: Asrock B350 m4 pro

PSU: Corsair CX550M

Cooler: Cooler master hyper 212 evo

Storage: 2TB WD Red x1, 128gb OCZ SSD for OS

Case: HAF 932 adv

yeah i will go for the 1080 then

what do you think about the reason for my GPU failing

vrm went bad? tbh its hard to tell with the information we have. i would assume one of the components just crapped out and fries. i would say the it is possible the vrm wen t bad and gave some of your components more voltage than they are meant to take. or maybe even a bad capacitors or something of the sort.

thanks, i hope it was just the gpu and not the psu

since the GPU is  RMA anyway i can send it back and get some money back

well it is important to note that a gpu VRM failure could be the result of the psu giving the card very unstable voltages putting alot of stress on the VRM. its hard to say that it was just the gpu because the power-supply would still work even if it is giving highly inconsistent voltage to your components. this is what alot of the lower tier power supplies do that are below to top 3 tiers.

i wouldn't say that. there are plenty of good 80 plus bronze power supplies that have pretty good voltage control some even better than some 80 plus gold power supplies. power supply efficiency doesn't tell anything about the voltage control the power supply has. if you are curious to where your power supply land in the tier list here is the link to the tier list.

also if you want more detailed information on how good of voltage control your power supply has i would suggest looking a johnnyguru review of you specific model as he goes over the voltage variation of all the psu he reviews. all psus have some variation in voltage but the good ones keep it to a reasonable amount that the vrm of your components should be able to handle
