If i mod cpu 771 to fit 775 mobo, or other way around will i lose any server benefits?

often since these CPUs use different chipsets originally, they will have different features in mind.

 

I.e. you may loose ECC support or other server-specific telemetry features in the chipset.

You also won't have the built in stability of server grade hardware or ECC.

 

It's not that big of a deal for light use servers that aren't mission critical.

 

I built a server out of a xeon and an mid tier gaming board (was a great deal) for my wife's office and it's been as reliable or more than the old HP proliant server that it replaced. YMMV

But i would like server to be stable so i can just leave it somewhere. Is there any way to buy lga771 motherboard or just any server motherboard for less than 150USD? Because i think that motherboards that sells as LGA775 with little note that is supports LGA771 is actually modified LGA775 so i will again lose server support for some server features.

The only source for 771 motherboards that I'm aware of is through eBay or used from recyclers.

 

Just because you don't have server gear doesn't mean it won't be stable. Server boards use higher quality components and thus are a lot more expensive than consumer variants, their chipsets offer a few extra features that will not likely be of any use to you.

 

Unless your server workload involves super high accuracy calculations then even ECC memory isn't necessary. You will likely be able to get by with a consumer grade board.
