Hello!

Just built 100% brand new pc. 7700k running at 85+ C at 1.3v, 80+ C at 1.25v in under 5 minutes of real bench stress test. I'll be overclocking, so thats unacceptable. I assumed it was an issue with my AIO kraken x52 , so I double checked everything possible (cables, screws, backplate) and reapplied the thermal paste multiple times. The NZXT monitoring software(CAM) shows me that the liquid temp is normally between 29-31 C and pump rpm floats around 2600-2800 bc i set it at full speed. 9 fans are functional with as good as circulation can get in this case. 4 intake 120 mm fans push/pulling the AIO in front of case. So now I think its an issue with the cpu. Is this common? Just a defective chip or the TIM application was applied poorly by the manufacturer, or what else? I'm planning on returning the chip as of now, but would like to know if that's a good decision. Idle temp is usually 26-30 C.

This has been bothering me for a week or two so I have to do something or I'm gonna lose my mind. Any advice or info would be awesome. Thanks!

i7-7700k

asus strix 1080 ti (MIA)
asus ix formula
samsung 960 pro 512
seagate 1 tb sshd

I had heard of guys delidding these and getting like -15C on preliminary tests as a result.  Could just be a CPU issue.  Interested to see what others have to say.

the silicon lottery does not guarantee thermal satisfaction.

what app are you using for synthetic load?

what temps are you getting for real-world usage?

what temps do you have if the side panel/roof panel is removed?

IMHO, there is nothing wrong with your CPU. a delid may/may not help as the limited information can't provide definitive proof of ills.

Might as well try a CPU swap for a new one, if that doesn't fix the problem then there may be some issues with cooler installation because an AIO shouldn't be getting that hot at max pump speed

Yeah I actually just ordered some delidding tools last night, should be a fun experiment : )

Yep, just filled out the return for amazon, hopefully that will fix it. And I've literally tried everything on the cooler. I even switched and tried the hyper evo 212, which was a few degrees hotter than my kraken x52, which would suggest that something else is the issue.

a- i wouldnt say i'm looking for 'thermal satisfaction' from it lol. idk... let me know where I'm wrong here, bc I'm new to overclocking and definitely may have picked up some misinformation in the last few weeks of research--- I was under the impression that the silicon lottery primarily refers to the variance in frequency at any given voltage of a chip. the silicon will indirectly effect temps through voltage, but not directly.  So if you put all the kaby lake chips in identical rigs and set a fixed voltage(1.25 for example), they should all be in the same ballpark...  while my chip found a new ballpark and is sittin at a toasty 80+ C.  if silicon variance between chips does directly effect temps, it shouldn't be anything like the spikes i'm seeing.  My guess is that the TIM application for my chip was botched by the manufacturer, or maybe the chip was damaged somewhere else in the process.  What are the chances of that?

b- I've used real bench, prime 95, and some other asus stress test, but primarily just used the 15 minute test(usually quit at 5 or so) on real bench bc I heard prime 95 would push my temps even hotter.  but idk what synthetic load is to be honest lol, hope that answered the question

c- real world usage would be higher than it should. up to 60 turning on pc, up to 70 just browsing chrome I think? Not sure on gaming, haven't received my graphics card yet. And I've read from multiple sources that using the integrated graphics doesn't effect cpu temps.

d- I've tried a lot of different things with airflow like the top and front panel, but didn't take note of any temp changes bc they were so minor.  So unless me having my PSU upside down is an issue(there is a small opening under the case), then I don't know what else to try.

a. all K CPUs can overclock, but the factors remain are speed vs voltage vs temperature. the lottery refers to all of those factors.

b. synthetics are only testing vehicles to ferret out unstable systems in a quicker amount of time. unless you are rendering in blender or premier, the systems seldomly are taxed to duplicate a synthetic bench run.

c. real-world usage is the only test for stability as this is the environment the computer will be used in. your system is fine, yes, it will run into thermal issues (prolly case related) as 60° under use is normal (over 50% CPU load), idle should be 5-8° above ambient. 70° using chrome with embedded applications can be normal.

d. might look into these threads:

http://phanteks.com/forum/showthread.php?488-Evolv-ATX-Heat-Airflow-Issues

http://www.overclock.net/t/1589535/phanteks-evolv-atx-bad-temps/0_30

maybe look at another temp app hwmonitor or real temp (not use two at the same time) to verify the CAM software.

what temps are you getting stock (no overclock)? have you undervolt the CPU to find speed/voltage for stock? if not, thry this guide.
