Hello.

I am putting a system together and most of my parts have arrived, but I realized that I ordered the wrong GPU.

I was going to get the Asus Dual RX480 8GB, but instead ended up purchasing the 4GB varity.

I have returned the GPU and when I get my refund I will be purchasing a new one, but I was if there is any significant performance difference from the Dual series and the STRIX GPUs from Asus?

Also, would any of those cards pose a problem if I decided to watercool it?

Thanks.

the cheapest one is my recommendation.

and for water cooling dont bother with these cards.

if you want to water cool do it to something that is worth watercooling like a 1070/80/80ti

CPU-I7 4790

COOLER-Be Quiet Pure Rock Slim

MOBO-Gigabyte Z97 HD3

SSD-Kingston SSDnow 240GB

HDD-Segate Barracuda 1TB

XFX RX 480 GTR Black Edition is really really good.

The cooling system is amazingly good and it has a very healthy factory OC.

Thanks @Droidbot. I will take a look at them. ^^

@TheOnlinePotato, do you have a reason for saying so?

they dont really need watercooling, and the amount of money you spend on a custom loop its much better to get a nicer card with more horsepower.

remember the custom loop remains after the GPU is replaced, obviously a new block is required, but saying putting them on water is pointless is kinda wrong. You don't even know what res the OP is playing at, a 480 is great for 1080P and water offers more than just higher clocks

At that price, with the price of 1080s dropping, he could get a 1080/1070 for the same price and be getting better or comparable performance from the single card.

true but it dosent really need watercooling to achieve good temps and clocks

For what price? I aint seen no 70/80 available for the price of a 480. It aint much more to add a GPU to a custom loop, literally 2 fittings and the block, remember I said there could be more to this than pure FPS/performance, many people go for water for lower temps and lower noise not just performance

For the price of 2 480s. Read. That's 2 GPUs (from $220-310 each, so $440-620 for both) and 2 blocks and 4 fittings.

Edit:

where does it say 2x 480s?

I was maybe planning on putting 2 cards for CrossFire, for better performance in 3D modeling and rendering (which I don't even know if it does help)

but I do definitely want to do a watercooling loop partly because I've always wanted to try it at least once, but mostly I think it would be a disaster for the computer to be running in the summer in my apartment (it gets pretty humid in the northwest region of US)

To be honest, with the amount that you would spend on both cards, plus both blocks, and the fittings, you may be better off going with a 1080 or a 1070. Another option is waiting around to see if the "re-brand" roomer is true or waiting to see how VEGA (though no appx dates are set besides sometime in Q2) turns out.

I suppose I can do that, but if I am planning to be watercooling GPUs in the first place, the cost of the waterblocks and fittings would be negated.

As for the price of 2x480s for the price of one 1070, I am planning to use this mostly for 3D modeling and rendering (I don't play a lot of games all that much)

(also, I kind of don't like that I would be using a nVidia card on an AMD system, which should not matter at all really, but it bothers me)
