M.2 vs NVMe?

Go to solution Solved by Nup,

NVME is just the controller of the storage device, M.2 is just the form factor and connect type, like you said.

So both will fit the M.2, but they are different devices (one is a standard ssd the other an nvme ssd)

Here's a video on NVME

So I'm building my new PC, and my motherboard has x2 M.2 slots. I'm looking at getting a Samsung 960 Evo, but noticed it says M.2  NVMe. Ive also seen Crucial MX300, wich says M.2. The interface is obviously different, but are they both going to fit a M.2 interface?

I haven't worked much with this And didn't know if M.2 was just a standard interface on the board that accepts different style M.2 SSDs or if the motherboard has to be M.2 NVMe specific.

M.2 is the older interface that gives you the same speed as sata SSDs.  You need a Samsung 960 EVO or similar to get NVME (PCI Express) speeds.

Thank you! The Samsung 960 Evo 500GB is the model I've got in my shopping cart at the moment. Thank you very much for your help. Upgrades from an older generation are nice, and give me a chance to have hands on experience with the newer technologies my previous PC didn't expose me to.
