Reformat

Go to solution Solved by b1ack1otus,

Well, this thread can be closed.

Hello Everyone,

Sorry if this topic has been discussed before, but I am having some issues with my Windows 7 and debating whether I should reformat or not.

I wanted to ask the community on how often you guys reformat your computer (or ever for that matter).

One reason I'm holding back is because I do have quite a bit of program installed. However, main OS is on the SSD.

Some of you may say, "use ninite.com" like Linus have suggested before, but yes I am aware of that website.

Also, if Linus ever sees this, if he would give his input on this.

As a linux user, specifically arch, I feel just managing my system myself, knowing what is installed, what is currently being used, how often, what isn't needed means that I can manage everything (even the kernel, which arch nicely updates without issues) means I technically 'reformat' about every week.. but not actually reformatting just replacing and updating as seen fit. Being able to do mass uninstalls of programs is very nice compared to windows.

Arch Linux on Samsung 840 EVO 120GB: Startup finished in 1.334s (kernel) + 224ms (userspace) = 1.559s | U mad windoze..?

I've been thinking of switching to linux mint, but when I tried it on VM, it doesn't support the 1440p resolution.

You need to edit some files by yourself to make it work.

With that in mind, I would like to use linux, but I think it'll take a while. Also, I would have to dual boot for games.

I reformat annually, unless it gets corrupted or what not. It really refreshes your PC.

Thats probably because the VM stuff wasn't letting it, pretty sure that normally it should ask the monitor what its native resolution is, but inside a VM the VM responds not your monitor.

Try loading a live CD instead and see if it gets it right there.

Do you not get tired of reinstalling all the software again?? especially if you made some changes to it ... like the settings and stuff :o

I know I do.

I just grit my teeth and do it. I do mind, but I think the pros outweigh the cons.

Wow, my old rig built in 2004 still has its original Win XP install rocking and rolling, slow but still rocking and rolling. My new system (2012) is still on its original Win7 SP1 install and better stay on it unless I upgrade to Win8.1 or what ever in the future but a re-install of the same OS sounds like an epic fail, to me.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.

Haha, fair enough.

I tried booting it from the CD, same result ... the closest resolution would be 2560x1600

Haha, well I tried upgrading to windows 8.1, but it's not going too well. There's all sort of issues that it's giving me right now as I'm trying to explore all methods without having to reinstall everything. :(

Interesting, it thinks your screen is 16:10 not 16:9 which is odd, but as you can see it does easily support the resolution, just need to fiddle a little with drivers after installation to get it correct.

yeah, I found an edit online that will "force" the resolution to 1440, instead of 1600.
