Hello, I am looking at changing up my setups and right now I am thinking about selling both of my gaming PCs and buying a laptop. If I sell them both and then invest a litte bit of money I think I can get something that would have the on-par performance to my existing setup.

Requirements:

  • Max budget is around $2000, I can save up more if needed
  • Ideally 15" but I could manage with a 17"
  • Would like it to be portable but I understand that its not really that possible with the specs I'll need.
  • Would like a USB-C Thunderbolt port
  • Most of the time it will be used with an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse so it doesn't need great onboard ones.
  • Good speakers are appreciated but not necessary
  • Will be used to play Overwatch at 1440p
  • Will be used for Premiere Pro but primarily After Effects
  • EDIT: It would be very nice if it didn't have a full on 'Gamery' look but I can live with it

Thanks!

Overwatch isn't incredibly GPU intensive.

I'd recommend a Dell XPS 15 (i7, GTX 960). Perfect for video editing and should handle Overwatch respectfully.

Also, if you switch to the iGPU when you can afford to, the battery will last a while.

Not at 144hz (unless he wants t play it at very low settings and downscales the rendering... I dont think thtas a good idea xD).

If Im not wrong, in this topic, the OP is going to make a custom build on one of those retailers (which assembles custom laptop builds), so again, if Im not wrong, this topic could be useful!

my 970 plays it at 1440p on near-max at 90 Hz, a 1050ti or 1060 should handle it just fine

Im not suggesting to build a pc like those ones, Im suggesting to build a custom pc so he can throw a i7 + 1060/70 if he pleases and the display that he wants.

The Dell I linked above will play it fine, is incredibly portable and is within his price range. It sounds like the laptop's primary purpose won't be for overwatch, but rather video editing.

This would be my favorite option, but I find it a little lacking in the GPU department. Looking at some reviews, I think I'll pass this one for now.

But It doesnt have a 1440p 144Hz display D: (Im just sticking to the OPs requirements) Anyway, I think thats Its overpriced o.O

Edit: he didnt say anything about high refresh rates. Then I suggest you @SCGazelle to buy a 1060, you dont need a 1070 to play OW at 60fps, even a 1050ti would get the job done. (lwering some settings at 1440p)

Hmm, interesting. How will it handle in After Effects? So particle Generators, 3D animations and such... I was thinking I would need something like a 1070 for that.

a 1050ti is fine for editing but in gaming a 1060 or 1070 will make a difference

Interesting. I believe you've read the entire thread so could you recommend which website I should look at for a custom laptop?

Yeah, Ive read the thread but I havent visited the websites, I just looked into the specs they were talking about hahaha sorry. I let that job for you :).

I think its a great idea since you can throw into your laptop any component that you want to. Your favourite 1440p display (IPS if you will) and the cpu + gpu combo that you desire. I have to say that Im not into vidoe editing but I would say that any "gaming" laptop can handle perfectly those editing programs so you dont need a 1070 IMO.
