So I'm looking to do some upgrading to my rig, keep in mind that I've already ordered a new GPU and other such stuff. What i'm looking for would be to upgrade my cpu or just change out the platform. I do primarily gaming, but I am starting to help a buddy kickoff a youtube channel so i'm doing editing now as well. Looking specifically at Xeon chips and what they have to offer, but I'm clueless when it comes to server stuff.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions. Budget is around 200 for the chip (can do more). If you suggest a platform switch then please back it up with a reason (don't just say "Buy Ryzen m8" I already know what it has to offer.) Willing to buy used.

Don't really know if this is a good one since I haven't really tried it, but 2 years ago when I was joining the PC master race in search of a new PC to buy a cousin recommended me a Xeon E3-1241-V3 because it is basically an i5 4690 (Non-K) and I also told him that I would be editing and recording. And (Since I was a noob at that time) I told him I wouldn't be overclocking. When I look at it now it doesn't seem that bad of a deal. But I'd say look into it further since I don't know much about Xeons in general.

It is said that an Italian dies every time Spaghetti is broken.

That's why I break mine twice.

How much for the motherboard?

Assuming I had to buy a different one to switch platforms/ support a xeon, anywhere from 1-200. Cheapest possible.

In those scenarios I'd probably lean towards the 1700.

How about this, what if I just wanted to buy a chip? Are their any xeons that are compatible with the board I have now? How are they comparible in terms of performance?

Exactly what I wanted to do, except that's the reason I started this thread.

3770ks are 250 plus USD where I live. Used.

yeah...and your 2500K is worth around 120$ so that's still a relatively cheap upgrade...?

Touche :D

I guess if I don't see anything xeon related that I find interesting I'll just go for the 3770k.

i guess it also depend on how you like your current motherboard...and if you trust it to not give up on you in the near future...but if you think it's a good board and you havn't abused it...

Currently I'm getting system crashes, but i'm pretty sure it's the ram. Haven't figured that out yet.

I can't say much about the previous owner, the board is used, but I've treated it very well, I think it'll hold up. If the crashes continue after I switch out the RAM, then I'll just upgrade to R7. Thanks for the advice.
