pvr/media player? help

So my nan wants to be able to record live tv but my mum wants to be able to give her movies on a usb is there such thing as a device can do this any suggestions? (not htpc)

there are tons of deviceses like dvd or hdd recorderes with an integrated usb port and some kind of media player solution.
the problem often is, that the supported codecs are fairly limited, but afaik panasonic does a good job

Is that a tv? My nan can't get a tv lol she already has one I just need a box that sits there and does it I've looked and pvr has a USB port but never say if u can play media of it I'm just assuming they are to expand storage and u can record directly to the device.

no, it's not a tv.

unfortunately i'm from germany, where manufacturers offer differently named devices than in australia or the us. so i can't really say which one is available in your country.
but a good example would be a panasonic DMR-EH545 where you can choose between recording on hard drive or dvd and can play back media from usb.

ok, from what i've seen, this one http://www.panasonic.co.nz/products/home-entertainment/dvd-and-blu-ray/dmr-xw390/ is available in australia

the manual says it can play videos in divx, MPEG2 and MPEG4 AVCHD/H.264
