Hey, so this is a dumb question, i'm sure. But the thought occurred to me. I have a ps3 that I don't ever use anymore and, it's a fairly decent machine. Is it possible that I could repurpose it as a linux machine?

I checked on the interwebs to see if someone had thought of this before (they had) and i was getting mixed finds. I just wanted to poke my nose in here to see if this is a thing that's possible. I have no purpose for it anymore as i do all my gaming on the computer.

OtherOS was a feature available in early versions of the PlayStation 3 video game console that allowed user installed software, such as Linux or FreeBSD, to run on the system. The feature is not available in newer models and is removed from older models through system firmware update 3.21, released April 1, 2010.

So you are most likely out of luck, though it is possible to do some homebrew magic and downgrade firmware. But it would be difficult and I don't know if it'll work.

nope ... while sony removed an existing feature later in their hardwares life, the xbox was buttoned down tight to beginn with, not allowing other OSes on the hardware ever

pc master race. thanks much

oh well, there have been attempts from different PC OEM guys in recent years trying to make sure you ONLY use the OS that came with the system ... or at least make you jump through some hoops if you don't

at least theyre not Konami, right?

no, they are sony, they are paranoid AF about you running homebrew on their hardware or, heaven forbid, pirate their shizz ...

thats why they sell you an overpriced proprietary memory card with built in hardware DRM for your handheld console where a simple micro SD would have been perfectly fine for a fraction of the cost

While both PS3 systems running 3.21 and newer, and Xbox 360 don't support other operating systems in any official capacity, both can be forced to run Linux via some homebrew

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.
