G'Day guys,

I am searching for a new monitor for my setup.

My PC Specs:

- Intel core i5 6500K

- MSI GTX 970

Realistically I'm wondering if my system has the power to run a 4K monitor for gaming??

or should I be aiming more towards a 1440p monitor ??

Here's what I have my eye on at the moment:

https://www.ple.com.au/Products/620497/Samsung-U28E85KRS-28-FreeSync-4K-1MS-LED-Gaming-Monitor

I'd like the refresh rate to be 5ms or under and the display to be 27" at a minimum.

would appreciate any input you're willing to give

Cheers

I'd possibly upgrade your GPU, but if not, stick with a 1440p monitor or even a 1080p monitor. There are not a lot of GPUs that can handle 4k gaming at 60 fps. The only ones I can think of are the 1080Ti and the Titan X. Best to get 1080p if you're sticking with the 970, or get a RX 480 for 1080p, or 1070 for 1440p.

Here is an AOC monitor that is 1440p. 1ms response time, and LED Backlight monitor.

I do not know if there is a certain budget, but that i'd suggest getting that one.

the sky is up

it is possible a 970 will be able to run 4K in lighter games, but consider that you may run into a VRAM bottleneck, as the 970 has 4gb of VRAM (3.5gb effective, technically...) and that you'll be reducing a slew of settings to run 4K at acceptable frame rates.

a 1080 or better is suited for 4k gaming.
