My computer had been unused for about a week. Today i switched it on, played a couple of games of Hearthstone, then left it idle for about 4 hours. After that I started playing overwatch, played for around 15 minutes when suddenly my pc switched off and I saw a flame (about the size of one from a match) coming out of my gpu, on the left side of the power connectors. I switched off the psu, pulled out the power cable and took out the gpu. No visible damage, the flame came from inside, but the smell is bad.

What do you think happened and how to prevent it from happening again? I was about to upgrade soon, that's why I started tinkering with overclocking, but it ran very nicely for over a month. I just hope I don't need to get a new psu.

Psu: Corsair RM750 (system has been shutdown by mobo once due to a power surge, about 2 months ago)

Mobo: Asus Z97-C

Gpu: AMD radeon r9 290 Asus DirectCU II OC, overclocked about a month ago at 1100MHz (up fronm 1000) and memory at 5600MHz (up from 5040) usually running at about 85 celsius when under load

Cpu: Intel core i5 4570

I was about to test if other components were fine and put my old gt645 in but now I'm afraid that the psu will break that one too.

Don't test the power supply with components connected. Get a different power supply(if possible), and connect it to your current PC.

Call Corsair, see if you can get it replaced. If you have a spare PSU, see if the rest of your components work, if not, get Corsair to ship you new ones...

So you recommend contacting corsair directly and not the retailer?

The 2-year warranty has ended long ago.

Thanks @Godlygamer23

I think they would be the right people to call. If I am wrong they will probably redirect you to the retailer anyway. Not sure how long you've had it but they advertise a 5yr warranty on their website.

Yeah, the 2 years was an assumption, since usually all electronics have that. Ill contact them and see what happens. Thanks for the quick answers!

good luck! I think PSUs usually are advertised with longer warranties cuz they are 'supposed' to last...

The warranty is for five years according to their website:

If the psu was the cause of the fire within the graphics card, the liability should lie with Corsair. I'd ask them nicely if they can contribute.

Alright, I'll send them an email tomorrow when I take the packed psu to the carrier. I have to pay for the shipping, at least they'll send the replacement unit free of charge...

  • 2 weeks later...

Update: The mail concerning my GPU was never answered, sent it more than 5 days ago.

Secondly, When I had already packed the psu for shipping, the ticket received a comment stating that I should pack all the cables with the unit itself. I did not notice this comment before I shipped the psu. Do you think they'll deny the case because of this, and send the bad unit back on my expense?
