I'm building my first PC next weekend, upgrading from a laptop which has Windows 10 Home installed (came with either 7 or 8.1, can't remember). So, I was going to download from https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 onto a USB to get Windows 10 on my new PC... However, since I upgraded to Windows 10, will the product key from my laptop work for a Windows 10 install?

Halp :P!

Yep, it will, but actually it's against the T&C of Microsoft if I'm correct, but hey, I done it once.

in my experience talking to a real person and being nice usually got be better help.

I don't understand the purpose of your statement. The exact same logic can apply using the live chat experience. The live chat allows users to talk with real people as well.

If anything I think that the live chat experience would be better because you can reference back to a statement in text on screen rather than having to rely on more memory. Feel free to correct me.

Technically NO. Your laptop has an OEM license and it can only be used on that laptop. Legally speaking MS can tell you to pound sand. MS will know from the CD key thats its OEM so you cant lie to them. That being said, I have heard of some people calling and convincing them to transfer an OEM licence between machines. How well this will work for you I dont know.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
