While I do have a nice gaming rig in the TV room, I do have a bedroom gaming PC that I use at night after the kids go to bed.  Its specs are well below my main gaming rig, but are decent enough to play at 1080p@60Hz...

G4560

Cryorig C7

SuperMicro H710 mATX

16GB DDR4-2133

250GB Samsung 850 EVO

1TB WD Blue

Asus Strix GTX 1060 6GB OC

500W be quiet 80+ Silver

Thermaltake V21 case

Asus 27" IPS 1080p@60Hz

I reserve the online & high FPS games for my main gaming rig as the bedroom system is slower and wireless.  I tend to play a lot of open world games like Fallout 4, Skyrim, Witcher 3, GTA 5, etc, on the bedroom system.  My local Fry's has the i5-7500 CPU on sale for $169 + tax, and I am considering buying it and replacing my G4560 with it.  It would speed up my system in three ways.  First is obvious, it's a true 4-core CPU and the more CPU intensive games would run better.  Second is that I virtualize Linux on it for a more secure Internet and giving the Linux VM 2C2T rather than 1C2T would speed up my Linux VM.  Third would be that I could could setup an SSD cache on the 1TB WD Blue drive using a spare 64GB SSD I have.  I would use Intel's RST for that, which my current CPU doesn't support, but the i5 does.  For anyone who has not gamed on an SSD or Hybrid/SSHD, it does make a difference, not in the FPS, but does when loading and switching from zone to zone.

I am just wondering if it's worth it to upgrade.  I am sure I could sell my current CPU for at least $40, hopefully $50+, which would help offset the price of the new CPU.  But even for a total of $130-$140 out of pocket after selling my current CPU, will the likely minor bump in performance be worth that money?  Jury is out on that, so looking for opinions.

I mean, do you use your VM often?

If so, upgrading your CPU would definitely help it, and it would be worth it.

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

Yes. A 7500 would help a lot in open world games at 1080p
