Currently they scale pretty well for a dual setup. Reaching almost the performance of a 1080. However since they are still dual cards, things like compatibility makes them not worth the trouble at all.

A 1070 is better than 2x480. Not in terms of performance, but general reliability. Less power consumption and works FIRST time EVERY time in games.

What about in VR? That might make it viable pre-vega...

Depends on the game. The large majority of games and programs do not support multi-GPU or have bad scaling.

The extra heat, power consumption, noise, space, and issues is not worth it.

Buy a better single GPU.
