Hey guys, I was wondering if there is only one type of SDRAM for a laptop. Does it matter what kind of SDRAM I put into my laptop or is it standardized for every laptop? If there are many types of SDRAM how do I check if my laptop takes only specific type of RAM?

I was just looking to buy a laptop for my girlfriend, and wanted to check the price if it is cheaper to upgrade the RAM myself.

laptop memory comes in ddr versions just like with desktops, if you know the model you can look it up, and probably best to make sure the ram wasn't soldered in because some places will stupidly do so. But once you know the right ram to get and that you'll actually be able to remove the old stuff it's not terribly hard to do, just don't drop the soap screws

It matters what kind of SDRAM you get, because a computer can take DDR, DDR2, DDR3, or DDR4 SDRAM. Speed isn't really that important, but it would be prudent to figure out what the laptop came with originally and get something as close to that to avoid as many issues as possible.

Actually, speed is important, I put in my laptop a faster memory stick once and it messed up my laptop. Also, another laptop that I had wouldn't boot up until it had the right speed of memory in it. Not the right memory type, but memory speed.
