Sorry! Meant to put in Planning thread:$

Okay, I was wondering if I could build something like this system with this $200 computer I have running linux. (will be upgrading the HDD)

Basically, I want to see if I could do it myself for less than $130 + HDD upgrade. How would you do it? I will need at least 3, but would like 4 camera angles for a family members business.

Here is a more in-depth video of a 720p version of system I want to copy. He covers basically everything. Key features are the software motion detection and compressing the videos.

Camera options 1?

Camera options 2?

Would need this cable with those cameras

I have a monitor

I have an extra mouse

It's definitely doable on that budget; If you haven't already, I'd suggest checking out Synology Surveillance Station 8.0 :) Its client supports most Linux distros with the exception of Ubuntu, unless that has changed since last I checked. Furthermore, it is compatible with a whole lot of IP cameras (IP camera compatibility/support list) and they have a solid community if you ever need any help. Thank me later. Have fun!

Also, I nearly forgot, Xpenology is what you'll want to look up, if you plan on setting up your own Synology based server, in place of a Synology NAS.

Thanks for the links! I can change which version of Linux that machine is running no problem if there is not support.

I really appreciate it.

Not a problem. However, the camera you linked turns out to not be listed as compatible and, as a result, I think I may have overestimated the stretchability of the budget slightly. On Amazon, it appears the most affordable IP bullet camera(s) option with listed compatibility will likely either be an Amcrest or a Foscam (both starting at ~US$70 per unit). These are the bullet IP cameras I could find on Amazon closest to your budget:

Amcrest

Foscam

Not sure if you'd consider dome-type IP cams but you might be able to find cheaper alternatives that route. Also, there is a chance the same community who is behind Xpenology may have an answer to extended compatibility but I haven't looked into any of that myself so can't advise you on it.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for your effort! I am going to run all this by someone at work tomorrow. Security monitoring is much more her area than mine.

I'm probably going to end up over budget, but that's okay. If I can have fun building/setting it all up and learning on the way then it'll be worth it to me; it's all a gift anyway.

I'm going to look into a 50ft stereo 3.5mm extension cable and a female 3.5mm to 2RCA adapter so I can rig a omnidirectional mic near his employees :ph34r:9_9 Or how would you go about something like that?

I think the biggest challenge is finding all the hardware. Not just the cameras, but the receivers or ports for the cameras and everything else to plug into. Not to mention power for the cameras... heh never done anything like this before.
