Hello everyone!

I was wondering if buying an external NVMe storage would be worthwhile.

I am looking to buy a laptop which has an nvme drive inside (I will look at this in another topic), and will be 'on the go' quite a bit. My initial idea was to run a script when the laptop is connected to a dock/the drive, and then update all the files in a specified folder. Therefore, do you guys know of any easy solution to having an external NVMe drive? I don't want to spend too much on it, as it would likely only hold the nvme drive.

I would most likely connect it through usb-c 3.1 or even thunderbolt (way overkilled, but if it's a must).

Cheers!,

Sneling

Do you really need the speed of an NVMe drive over a standard SSD to accomplish that?

I dont think it could perform at its highest speed?

USB 3.1 Gen1 only supports up to 5GB/s and the new USB 3.1 Gen2 only supports up to 10GB/s. So you won't get the full speed that way. Also seems a bit overkill to me for external storage.

You could get a Samsung T3 (Gen1) or something like a Sandisk 900 for Gen2.

The only Thunderbolt solution I know of would be something like this:

Does you mum know you're here?

The latency of USB would bottleneck a NVME drive you would have to make a razercore like solution to use thunderbolt unless there is a solution already out there

So an external SSD is a better purchase

Okay yeah, it's what I expected. As this will most likely be over USB, I guess that an external SSD will be way more than sufficient. I will do some further research, but I wasn't expecting that nvme storage as it's way overkill.

Thanks for the help everyone!
