So I am building my friend a pc for his birthday which is the 28th of March. The budget is $600AU and I am buying most parts off Amazon and the part list includes a keyboard, mouse, and monitor as well as the pc. It is a extremely tight and I need to know if you can copy all the files from my laptop to his ssd in his new pc.

What I mean is can I clone my Hard Drive in my laptop to his new ssd? I have an external drive bay to put the ssd in but I want to do this so he does't have to pay for windows.

Thank you

- Eden

Probably not.  If the Windows license on your laptop is an OEM license, very likely NOT.  Even if it's a retail license, you will have to reactivate it and there may be issues due to differences in hardware configurations and drivers installed.

Install Linux for him, it's generally free.  Until he can afford to pay for Windows.

It is an Asus laptop. What about if you delete the drivers and reinstall new ones?

I just reset my laptop because of a worm on it so I don't care if I have to reset the laptop again.

Almost every retail laptop you buy comes with an OEM license, that's generally tied down to the hardware.  I can't say with 100% certainty whether what you want to do will work or not.

I saw on PaulsHardware (I am sorry) that you can download the iso and go off that until you can afford to buy the code. Is thi true?
