Installing a different I/O shield possible?

Guest Darth Revan

Well just like the name of the thread says can you install a I/O shield from a different motherboard?

Some time ago I sold my case and without realizing at that time I sold it with the I/O shield, now ever since that I've put my pc together without the I/O shield. Now I've found one today from a different motherboard and its pretty much identical apart from missing one port, I think it was a firewire port. So basically it has one hole missing that doesn't align with my current motherboard.

Can I use it or not? Will that somehow damage something? I don't know make short somewhere somehow?

I ask because I've never done it and don't want to ruin anything, I'm not like Linus on a mission to destroy hardware.

there may be some misalignment of the tension tabs or the holes themselves in relation to the board above the standoffs that could do some damage. be careful.

You can try grabbing a Dremel or similar tool and drilling out the hole you need. I'd recommend putting electrical tape in the hole too. Test fit before powering on
