I am a new builder and have absolutely NO idea what the advantages are to having a liquid cooler, so bear with me. So basically all I understand is that it allows you to overclock higher and it makes your stuff cooler than fans do, but if your not overclocking is there any point in putting a liquid cooler on something?

Which processor are you cooling?

Nothing currently, just want to learn for the future.

If you don't overclock your CPU, your motherboard/CPU doesn't support overclocking or don't know how to overclock then there is no need for a liquid cooler. If you only go for the looks then that's is pretty dumb. If you want to overclock on high frequency then I would suggest an liquid cooler otherwise just go for an aftermarket aircooler.

the ONLY reason you would have a liquid cooler for a non-overclockable  CPU is if you are in a  mini itx case (smaller than console size).  You are right about you being able to oc CPU's further but you can do that on an air, but just not as far as a liquid cooler could.any case any bigger than a super-compact mini itx case there is no need to have a liquid cooler.

With a liquid cooler, there are more points of failure, two of which are harder to fix than the other. with an air cooler, on the other hand, there is only 1 point of failure and it is easily fixed. Liquid coolers do make more noise but in the right case it shouldn't be a problem.

Hope this helped you :)
