i think you guys know what this topic is gonna be about... Ryzen !

i currently have a 4690K overclocked to 4.5ghz. at the moment it serves my needs quite well, but i've found that it's bottlenecking my 1070 in some games. plus i might get into 144hz gaming relatively soon. but most importantly, i suppose it is for futureproofing

this is where Ryzen comes in: the R7 chips are coming out later next week, and benchmarks shortly prior. i know i know, bait for wenchmarks. but my dilemma here is that i prefer the R5 chips, specifically the 1600X. sadly as i've heard it isn't getting a simultaneous release, so i have to wait even longer. i can probably just bet on the R7 benchmarks as they release and predict that the R5 chips will be more-or-less perform similarly. though it's not a solid bet

in addition, stock may be a slight issue. i didn't pre-order the Ryzen chips

on the other hand, i can upgrade to Skylake / kaby and get a 6700k / 7700k if they get price cuts after Ryzen release. of course that means getting a new mobo and DDR4 ram (might be able to carry over the CPU cooler, not sure). also reinstalling windows, which may be a pain in the ass to do.

alternatively stick with haswell and get a 4790K.

now i intend to overclock whatever chip i happen to get in the end, though not very far. i'm not playing for the silicon lottery so if i hit a wall, tough luck.

i think i'll ask this again when the R7 Ryzen benchmarks come out, but i think i'll ask for advice now and see what i can do.

You would be better off waiting for R5 if that's the one you're interested in. When the R7 benchmarks are released some people will disable two cores and be able to show how the 1600X will perform.

The 1700 is $329 which is less than the 7700K, even after a price cut for Intel (Probably won't happen if you can imagine how furious everyone who paid full price for them will be). Intel is also planning to release the 8000 series already.

Just hold on tight for the benchmarks, and then decide on the best bang for the buck.

If you can get a price cut on the 7700k, it will definitely perform better than the new Ryzen processors in gaming, but I would wait for new Intel before deciding.

no price cuts on the 7700k that's just micro center sale, Ryzen would be much better price to performance.

In terms of price/performance 4790k is in the lead by A LOT for you. All the other options require a new cpu + new mobo + new ddr4 ram, which will be $600+ easily. I would just grab a 4790k for ~$200-300 and overclock it.

It'll barely be slower than the other options too, for gaming.

yeah but the colors for my mobo i personally dislike now. pretty poor taste of an excuse but i have a case with a window, so it'll be nice to have a setup that looks appealing to me

i could sell my 4690K setup, with the mobo, the chip, and the RAM though i think it'll lose quite a lot of value with Ryzen around the corner and that the chip is overclocked

Hey if you want to upgrade to Ryzen, go ahead and upgrade and don't let anyone tell you what you should or shouldn't do.

I'm in the same boat as you actually.  i5 4690k with 1070 and 165hz display.  I know my i5 is a slight bottleneck at times, and I'm probably going to upgrade to Ryzen 1800x or 1700x.  I probably won't notice any difference for gaming.  I just like to upgrade.  If you have the money and aren't going into debt, do it.

Well if you got money to spend then do what makes you happy lol. Just know that it's not optimal price/performance wise. I did the same myself, 4770k to 7700k.

i would save as much money as i can, but truth be told i'm not sure if i'll be using the 1700x to its fullest potential anytime soon. i might in the future, hence planning for futureproofing

Oh my god... Wait for Ryzen...

yea i got that much. it's mostly a concern of my current setup.

I guess I was in somewhat the same situation, spec wise.

4670k @ 4.4ghz

Gigabyte z87-udh5 - rear usb have never worked.

8gb of Corsair DDR3 1600mhz

Galaxy 780gtx HoF

256gb samsung 840 pro SSD

But last year I got an itch and upgraded the monitor, which had been 1080p, which also caused me to upgrade my gpu.

Acer xb271hu 27inch IPS 1440p

Gigabyte G1 1080gtx

All of a sudden I found myself not really relating what should have been a huge deficit to the rig, the cpu, and to a lesser extent the ram. Given that the cpu has been paired with that samsung ssd from day one I know for a fact they both have 29646 operating hours. So this year I was planning to at least upgrade the main drive to a M.2. drive which requires a new motherboard, and so I started to really dive into the cpu selection and I found myself thinking...

I just couldn't give a crap on what had been released since my i5 haswell, nor could my games at 1440p. Which, amusingly, really ticked me off. The first pc I ever built myself was an Athlon Thunderbird 1.2ghz. Went to a e8400 after that, and then the i5 4670k. But this go around I just couldn't find anything to get excited about as far as mainstream cpu goes, including the Kaby Lakes. The actual gains were so small at 1080p, and are even smaller at 1440p...

Then I started to research into Ryzen, and I just might have found something worthy of being considered a step up.

Pretty much the worst people can throw at it is that it might be barely better than haswell in ST, and for me that is still better than what I have so my gaming won't suffer at all. I'll get the DDR4 I'm more interested in which will help me in all things including gaming. Even with some supposed memory controller issues 3200mhz with 2 sticks should be fine, and 16gb is what I was always aiming for anyhow. The Asus Crosshair 6 Hero has the m.2. slot I want, and doesn't have the first slot the #1 pci-e 16x so my Noctua D15 won't interfere with it. With corsair lpx 3200mhz ddr4 sticks the front fan will also rest on top, so no issues in the front either.

For me, the need/want isn't about the dang cpu since what I have for gaming does everything I need.

But what I WANT to upgrade requires a new motherboard, and so I am forced to choose a cpu.

Ryzen offers me at an acceptable price point for something Kaby Lake just simply isn't; something worth having over what I currently got.

I just went and built my friend across the hallway his 7600k rig with a 1070gtx, so it's not like I can't actually compare with my own eyes.

So 1800x I go.

So if all you feel you need to upgrade is your cpu, then i'd get the 4790k. There just isn't enough of an improvement to warrant the costs associated with doing a mobo/ram/cpu upgrade if all you feel you need is a better cpu, cause they won't be that much better.

i appreciate the response !

a 4790K looks promising to me. but i'm tempted to go with kaby or Ryzen to take advantage of the newer tech available to these chipsets, most notably ddr4 ram. ddr4 ram pricing seems to have leveled with ddr3, so it's not that bad of a change.

and about the comment of IPC: if Ryzen can get skylake levels of IPC, then that'll be great. if you have to overclock to reach it, that's still fine, though i don't want to extreme overclock nor hope to win the silicon lottery to achieve high OC.
