Im wondering what i should do, I have an S24D590 Samsung monitor and i'm going to get the Acer R240HY bidx 23.8-Inch as a second monitor. Now, my graphics card ( a GTX 970 gaming edition) only has one HDMI, a display port and an AVI port. MY motherboard has 2 HDMI ports. I tried plugging one HDMI cord into the graphics card and the other into the motherboard but the second screen would never turn on, it would just always search for a signal. When i put both HDMI cords in the motherboard nothing would come up on either monitor. So, should i just use one HDMI cord and one AVI chord and would that cause any problems to the viewing experience or the sync of the monitors. I'm very new to this and trying to figure out how this should all work. Thanks for the time and help.

You can just use a DVI to HDMI adapter or cable on the GPU, that won't cause any issue.

Indeed there are some HDMI/VGA/DVI connectors on your motherboard, BUT these connectors are there for a reason. When do you own a CPU and a MB both with integrated graphics then the connection should work only if you set that up to work through windows but even if you do that you'll still get ONLY one display. Because you are not able to use two graphics cards on two monitors at the same time(as far as I know. Technically it should work, but practically I really don't know) If you want to use both monitors then you should try with an adapter, HDMI to DVI or even VGA (Active adapters ofc) so you won't get any failures during the using of the PC(Both monitors have to be connected to the same GPU Device. The integrated one or the dedicated one)

another quick question i had was, i have the MSI nvidia gtx 970 gaming edition, it has a 24pin DVI'I port and a 24 pin DVI D port, does it matter which port i use?

It doesn't matter in this case the only time it's a concern is if your require VGA as only a DVI-I port has the pinout for analog connection.
