So I am testing out the WD software that came with my external 4TB drive and it seems to work fine in the sense of it backing up specific files on specific days that I can set. Are there any other backup programs that work better?

I mean software wise, I only have the money for on site drives.

Oh, my bad. Dropbox is also good, I personally use it and nothing else.

Dropbox is nice but it's not nearly enough storage and I don't want to pay a monthly fee for anything. If I was going to store something online, it would be my photos, which is around 60GB.

I use bacula it's open source and works on Multiple platforms. http://blog.bacula.org/

theres a ton of competing local cloud solutions if you have multiple devices that need syncing. I have a problem where I end up backing up an older version of files when I back up my laptop and desktop computers. I can't recommend a particular one as I'm still exploring them. Next cloud seems to be alright

Best backup is to just clone drives...The software should be able to do that. You could clone the image as well, but then you rely on many other factors.

Cloning the drive assures you have a backup. Cloning the image only or folders...depends on where they are stored.

You cold back stuff up to little flash drives and not use them much to assure the reliability.

Acronis True Image is my software of choice for backup.

I'm interested about details especially a comparison with Apple's Time Machine (if you know it). I backup my laptop on two different drives by wifi but I'm planning a migration to a Windows laptop and I'm looking for good alternatives.
