What should I do?

does the motherboard support the cpu becuase that might lead to random numbers bieng  thrown if not the case you can try a system stability test. though be very careful becuase if there is something is wrong with the motherboard it can take out the processor right there though if it was taken strait out of the working prebuilt you should be fine

as some prebuilt  computers motherboards can be pretty wierd sometimes

I booted up Windows and CPU-Z says it's at 0.68, so all is normal except for that wacky BIOS reading. Thanks guys

I built my new NAS/home server, but I have an odd problem. When I start it up, it says my cute little Pentium is running at 1.7 volts. Obviously way too high. I reset CMOS but that didn't fix it. Since the CPU has a stock Intel cooler on it and it's only running at like 33C, maybe the voltage is a faulty reading? What would you guys recommend doing? Do I go ahead and install Windows hoping the CPU won't be fried?

You shold check the power draw for that specific cpu and if 1.7 is way to high you can go to the bios and maybe underclock it otherwise if the system temps and everything else is fine it should work unless the motherboard is defective and sending 1.7 but if that were the case the temps would be crazy

Right since it's only at like 30C it would be pretty unrealistic that it would be getting that much power

That is true as if the voltage was that high you would probably burn the cpu as jayztwocents talks about in his video where he killed a processor called I blew up a cpu while benchmarking though I would make sure as if the motherboard was misleading you with the voltage it migh also be misleading you with the temps

The heatsink isn't very warm, so I think the temp reading is probably correct

@Spork829

Well if the cpu seems to be running fine and the temps seem good you should be fine to say that the temps seem to be inaccurate and on the bright side you aren't dealing with a i7 or a expensive cpu. If it were me I would do some research on others that might have dealt with problems similar to this and if you are really worried you can call the motherboard manufacturer but in all sense if the voltage was that high the system should be either super overheating or just plain dead but see if you can underclock or leave it running then see if the voltage changes over time

Yeah I might try underclocking, but as for the motherboard I took it out of an old pre-built so I'm not getting any support there.
