2016/2017 games and CPU usage...

I'm sure I'm going to get examples like Metal Gear Solid V as anomalies on this subject, but I'm seriously noticing a trend in newer games where they're all ridiculously CPU-bound.

 

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - on my personal PC, CPU usage is always 85% or higher in Prague, and never dips below 60% in any location unless I cap my framerate at 30. Regardless I can't enjoy a locked 60 at any setting, and low just looks like trash.

 

Watch Dogs 2 - people touted this game as one of the few Ubi titles that wasn't poorly optimized, well I beg to differ. How the hell can you recommend an i5 from the 3rd gen when not even an overclocked 6600K can provide smooth performance? Those problems don't go away until you move to an i7. Surprisingly, an FX-8350 will run this at the same level as a 5960X with the same graphics card.

 

Battlefield 1 - This is actually not very taxing in comparison, it's barely more multithreaded than Grand Theft Auto V, but it pretty much pushed the trend of overworking CPUs in modern titles into the mainstream with its punishing Frostbite engine.

 

Ghost Recon: Wildlands - Yeah, I know, I'm ragging on a beta, but I constantly get CPU spikes and it stays above 75% almost all the time on my end.

 

I know this isn't an extensive list by any means, but I didn't exactly play that many 2016 titles. I will say one thing though, it does make recommending an i7 look a lot more feasible than in the past. Fallout 4 saw no improvement with an i7, The Witcher 3 is almost entirely GPU-bound, etc. And now the CPU is becoming so much more utilized in almost every game.

GR:W is so badly optimised it hurts. 

Even with GTAV I don't see my keyboard's lights fucking lagging when I play...

Pushes my poor 4670k to 100% always

 

BF1 is good though.

WD2 is super well threaded. Rare, I know.

Everybody knows Mankind Divided runs like shit.. Ironically, Razer was their peripherals partner

I mean, I'm sure some things will improve with GR at release because we are looking at a beta and they haven't released dedicated drivers for it. Maybe some patches after launch will fix some of that.

It doesn't need it. It just wants it. Runs fine on the shitbox consoles, they didn't care about the PC.. yet again.

How did Human Revolution run on computers from 2010/2011? Not much better than Mankind Divided runs on the latest and greatest, especially when you crank settings up. Plus HR didn't have nearly as many custom graphics settings. The engine itself is very demanding, almost like Frostbite but to another level.
