I was playing Total War: Warhammer at highest settings, and all of a sudden, my screen went black--but the computer stayed on. Naturally, I knew this was a GPU issue. My GPU, an MSI 780 ti gaming, was old and having VRAM fan troubles. Twice over the course of two months, I had to start the fan by spinning it with my finger.

I quickly shutdown my computer, hoping it just overheated, but all of the fans had been spinning. When I tried to turn my computer back on, no video signal was outputted, and the GPU fans spun at 100%. I waited twenty minutes to let it cool down with no luck. Ultimately, I took out my 780TI and replaced it with my old Radeon 7700 HD; it seems to be working fine.

My question is: Can I fix my 780 TI via "baking" or is that a vain effort?

I doubt it overheated because if it had, my computer would have completely crashed. Moreover, all of the fans seemed to be spinning before and after the "black screen" incident. It seems like the stress of Total War just killed it.

I am planning on buying a new GPU when the new Vega cards are released, so I just need a temporary fix.

I'm not sure if you could rescue it, but why didn't you replace the fans if they were giving you problems?

I'm a cheap mofo and didn't want to spend $50 on an arctic vga cooler. Replacement fans were also selling for around $50.

Baking is an awful idea, but if you're going to do that, do that in an oven that you wont ever use again.

I was thinking about using an old toaster oven that I don't use. But I should probably worry about fumes...

This might be considered a NECRO but here's a relevant update:

"Is my GPU fixable?"

Apparently it is. Today, I bought a used toaster-oven for $3 from a store. Then, I threw the bad boy (MSI 780 TI Gaming) in there for a while (~7 mins @ 375 Degrees F). It came out working perfectly--as far as I can tell from playing Rainbow 6: Siege on it. I might make a post in the guides section about the process, but I feel like I'll add no new "info."

I recorded the entire process and can confirm the card definitely DID NOT work before I toasted it.
