Hello all,
Long-time reader first-time poster.

Recently upgraded my GPU from a 7970 to an RX480.
Got an Asus Strix RX480 and now almost every time I use my PC at random intervals the screen will flicker almost resembling large pixels then the display will turn off and I will receive a blue screen with the codes - VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (what failed) atikmpag.sys

This doesn't happen in game only during web browsing and working on documents,
Sometimes the PC will Blue screen and sometimes it will just fix itself and continue working.

I never had this issue until I upgraded my GPU, Running a 550w PSU and didn't change my CPU or any other components.

Wondering if there would be a fix for this.

Thankyou in advance!

Did you install the proper most recent driver for the 480? If you didnt and windows updated it automatically there's a chance that the driver install failed but is working enough for windows to think everything is fine while its actually borked(this is somewhat common). The first thing I would do is use Display Driver Uninstaller to completely remove your GPU driver via the recommended safe mode option. Then download a fresh copy of the most recent version of the relevant driver for the 480 and install it. Be sure to restart your PC after installing if it doesnt ask you to do so.

Other things to check is the connection of the PCIe cables to the GPU and the GPU into the PCIe slot on your motherboard. While unlikely it is possible that those could be attached enough to get you into windows but still cause some kind of issue.

No guarantee of a fix - but for these symptoms its always worth doing a really clean reinstall of the drivers.

Use DDU -> http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

And do a "Safe mode" clean out of old drivers, and then download and install most current from cards website.

For my new Nvidia card, Windows 10 downloaded the wrong driver also. I had to manually download and then choose custom install-fresh install. So I didn't have to uninstall anything, the program did it for me.

The "fresh" install via the driver installer always leaves things behind, sometimes what it leaves behind is whats causing the problem and if its the same as what gets installed by the driver installer then it doesnt get overwritten. Hence the need to use DDU to be sure that all of the files from the driver youre trying to get rid of gets deleted. Better to do it right once then to have to do it again.
