Hello all, I'm currently in the market for a new GPU.  ***Please note I'm in CANADA.***   Here are my system specifications.

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170MX-Gaming 5 Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Memory: GeIL EVO POTENZA 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory
Storage: ADATA Premier SP550 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage: Western Digital Red 1TB 2.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 1GB Video Card
Case: Corsair 350D Window MicroATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Cooler Master Elite V2 550W ATX Power Supply
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro OEM 64-bit
Monitor: LG 29UM58-P 29.0" 2560x1080 75Hz Monitor
External Storage: Western Digital My Book 3TB External Hard Drive

Ok so here are my thoughts so far.

1. I am willing to pay a premium up to around the $550 price range for a GPU that is going to last me 2 - 3 years.  This tidbit is pointing me in the direction of the GTX 1070.  My hesitation on purchasing this right now are the numerous reports that even the GTX 1080 is a "Mid-Range" graphics card selling for an High-Range price point due to the lack of competition at this level.  I am not knowledgeable enough in this area to agree or disagree so I'm hoping to get some opinions on the matter.  If true, does that not make the 1070 overpriced as well?

2. My current setup is based on a 2560x1080 monitor "capable" of 75mhz.  The 480 / 1060 seem like great options for this resolution and refresh rate but I doubt I would be able to scale with them as I upgrade monitors to 1440 eventually.  I could get either of these cards now for a much better price point but would that just end up costing me more $$ sooner if I do want to transition to 1440 gaming.

3. The Sea Hawk AIO coolers look so AMAZEBALLZ.  This is not really relevant.

4. The games I play.  ARMA 3 (GPU means nothing to this unoptimized mess of an amazing game.), Subnautica, BF1/BF4/BF 1942!, Ghost Recon Wildlands, CoH... and the like.

So, if you were me, what would you do?

Thank you.

5. I ran out of cookies.  Sorry. =(

whoever calls the gtx 1080 "mid-range" right now is high as a kite. the only gpu that outperforms it is the titan x pascal and that costs double the price without the performance to show for it. the gtx 1070 is fine. get the 1070, you will need it to max out games at 1440p.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

Yeah, whoever told you the 1080/1070s were 'mid-range' didn't know what they were talking about.  It won't be a waste on your monitor since your ultrawide is almost the same pixel density as a 1440p.  A 1070 is recommended for that.

@S_Project

Get a RX 480, then get another RX 480 when you want to upgrade to 1440p. That way you get roughly around GTX 1080 performance. Yes crossfire has its issues, but they are far far far far from as bad as many will claim. Ive been using CF for years now, it works just fine.
