What is this and why is it so controversial?

I kept hearing about it, how dangerous it was, and then I read it. 

Is this bad? It's just a condemnation, it has no teeth?

I've never heard of this motion before - must not be getting much media coverage.

 

I just read the Motion, and then I just read the Petition it references (Found here):

I honestly don't see anything inherently wrong with it. Islamophobia is bad. As the petition notes, there are 1.5 Billion Muslims world wide, whereas a few hundred or thousand of them might be actual terrorists.

 

It also goes on to state that it should use an Evidence-Based-Approach, which is the right thing to do. It further goes on to say that the Government should condemn hate crime in general, as well as religious and other intolerance.

 

The only way I can see this as "dangerous", is that if they incorrectly start labeling things as hate crimes.

 

The motion itself doesn't give anyone any extra power - it just recommends preparing a report with recommendations on how to use community initiatives to reduce hate-crimes.

 

I do question the need for it though, since Hate Crime is already illegal. But then again, there's been a stark rise in White Fundamentalist attitudes in the fringes of Canada lately (Very very very minority group, but they are the kinds of people responsible for that Mosque Shooting in Quebec a few weeks ago).

To piggy back off of what Dalek has stated.  I think the "controversial" part of the motion does center around the possibility of things being mis-labled as a hate crime. 

 

While the motion doesn't grant any additional powers, thankfully, Islamophiles (a term i just came up with) could attempt to use it to silence critics.  Kind of how people use that they were "offended" as a way of getting what they want, even if they weren't offended.
