Hello!

I am in the animation / entertainment industry and need some help- I am a first time builder, will be buying everything new, and building from scratch:

Budget & Location: $7,000 USD (although it would be great to come in under budget:) ) / Los Angeles

Aim: I will be using this for work, so daily use will be mostly Photoshop, with some Maya modeling / animation, with occasional rendering and sound editing / compositing / video editing. Here is a rough estimate of use:

  • Photoshop: %60
  • Maya: %30
  • Zbrush: %10
  • After Effects: %2.5
  • Camtasia: %2.5

Monitors: Wacom Cintiiq 27HD (Wacom pen used daily), and a 4K Dell 3216Q.

Peripherals (already owned)

  • Epson V600 scanner
  • Epson P600 printer
  • Fujitsu Scan Snap scanner
  • 27”HD Wacom Cintiq
  • Secondary Dell 3216Q 4K Monitor
  • TP Link Archer T9E wifi card
  • Corded mouse / keyboard
  • I plan on running Windows 10 (not purchased yet)

Why are you upgrading? I currently only have a laptop, and have been saving up for a long time to build the right system so I can work from home.

Case Preference Ideally, it would be nice to have the option to plug in my headphones on the top of the monitor. It would also be cool to have a side window.

HD setup I would like a fast system, and have heard great things about M.2, unless you guys have any other suggestions. I was thinking I would have 4 HDs:

  • M.2 250GB for OS
  • M.2 500GB for software
  • M.2 250GB for Photoshop scratch disk
  • 2 to 4 TB spinning drive for data

I am not sure if this HD setup is best / recommended, or even possible, just my initial thoughts after watching a ton of Linus's videos.

Conclusion

I would like to buy and build soon, I don't have a heard deadline. I am open to any and all suggestions. Thank you in advance, I appreciate your time, experience, and help.

btw you cant have 3 m.2 in one build so i recommend either a 1 tb ssd or 2 500gb ssds

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/dJLXFd

meets requirements, 2 1080s should be enough for 4k stuff too and rendering.  Btw 2 1080 are better than 1 titan xp, and if you want xps, just get 2 in sli.  I think you should get 2 1080s because i wouldn't want to custom make a watercooled titan xp if i were you.

edit: you can change the hdd if you want to to 2 4tb drives.

🙂

Thats pretty good except even in a full tower case, I'd recommend watercooled gpus so they operate at about the same speeds, cause in sli one of the gpus will be smothered from breathing.  Also i dont think op need 64 gb of ram but why not :)

1. go watercooled on the gpus

2. even though op says 3 different ssd drives, a 1tb 850 evo ssd would suffice

Hey hconverse02, xdeathshot20, CatXice, and Freezanator, thank you all for your time and the quick responses!

After reviewing your builds, I had a few questions,

  • I am curious as why two 1080s are better than say, the Quadro M4000, which is what is recommended by Nvidia to run Maya?

  • Not sure if the suggestions here of dual GPU cards has anything to do with having two monitors? But if so, I am willing to not use the 4K monitor and just stick to only using the Wacom full time if that will make things better / faster / more stable? @ hconverse02, are you saying you recommend water cooling for these GPUs?

  • Why only 1 M.2 drive? Is it possible to go more than 1? If so, how would you allocate them? (i.e. 1 drive to OS and the other to software?) Also, would the suggestion of 1TB SSD in leui of multiple Hds slow me down since i'd like to allocate 1 drive to a Photoshop scratch disk / dedicated OS drive, dedicated app drive?

@ hconverse02: Do Titan cards require a water cooler? I though they could run without water cooling?

@ hconverse02, xdeathshot20, CatXice, I was wondering why you recommend the i7 6900 over the i7 6950X Freezanator recommended?

Thanks again for your time- and please forgive my noob questions :)

Yeah op would probably want 2 1080s and a 1000w psu for those

So titan xps are blower style coolers, but one of the fans might be choked off in sli (if you use 2 titan xps) and the same goes with 1080s, but there is a watercooling option from evga.  Someone else would need to check me on this but 2 1080s outperform a quadro by a lot because the 1080 is meant for gaming and rendering work (idk what a quadro is for)

Eh 900w would be safe, especially with 2 gpus, a 6900k or 6950k or 6800k, and plenty of ram to go around

Whatever floats your boat

manufactures make the psu with some buffer for 1 and if they rate it to 750 with 80+ gold and yr running under 750 its fine if u started to push 800w on it then ye it will not like it and will not last long but if it goes over 750 for short times it will handle it no problem people freak out to much about psu power limts
