if my dad can do 2D autocad work on a laptop with a dual-core with HT

then i think you can probably do with a good desktop i5, im not familiar with 3D CAD work so i might be wrong

That's a pretty limited budget for that kind of work but all you need is CPU, Mobo, GPU, and (I assume) RAM?

It should work well but obviously you'd still need: cooler, case, PSU (don't cheap out on this), KB/mouse, & monitor, as well as an OS.

 

You could probably get a better setup if you went with lightly used parts though. Find someone selling a higher end 900-series GPU or someone selling their 5th or 6th gen i7.
