Hi, I am very new to Linus Tech Tips

I made an account just to get help with Port Forwarding

I have been having trouble port forwarding on my room Desktop.

Things I have:

PC: Windows

Modem: arris tg862g/ct

Router: Netgear R6100

The arris tg I have is a router/modem combo but I only use it as a Modem. The Router is connected to the Modem by Ethernet.

The network is not in Bridge mode

Things I have tried to do for Port Forwarding:

I gave my router and my computer a static IP

I have made a made a port forward rule on the router

I have Port forwarded my router through my modem ( and enabled port forwarding through the modem)

I made an Inbound and Outbound rule for my Windows Firewall for the port

I have checked that the ISP does not block the port I am attempting to open (443)

I have also tried to download Port Forwarding software but that still failed to help open ports

I have done all of the things above but when I go to any port checker, my port is still closed.

Is there anything I am missing in these steps?

-Thanks for your time

-Thanks

Having two routers on the network can cause a number of issues with port forwarding, even if you only use the modem/router combo as a modem, it is likely still performing some routing functions that interfere with port forwarding on the other router, especially if it's an ISP provided unit, as they often don't like having things disabled.

I would try removing your R6100 from the network (just for testing) and set the Arris modem/router to function as modem and router. Then, try port forwarding through the Arris modem/router and see if things work. If so, it's a conflict somewhere between the two routers, likely involving NAT or firewall settings.

Thank you for replying!

The R6100 is a much better Router than the built in one in the Arris tg, Is there a way I can disable the router on the Arris tg and still have the internet run fine and be able to port forward?

-Thanks

It's a matter of testing, not suggesting doing it permanently. It may be that you need to purchase a dedicated modem to prevent conflicts.

You'd have to look in the Arris settings. You basically want to disable everything like NAT, DHCP, DNS, firewall and anything else to do with the router. Some devices have modem modes, which you can look for, but I doubt it has one. With ISP units, I've found that they often throw a tantrum if you disable things like NAT and DNS.

I have already disabled NAT and it already had a static IP. The modem also gives us landline and the modem was the only model comcast gave us that supported the modem and gave us landline at the same time. So I guess i'm stuck with the Arris :/ .

-Thanks for your help though :)
