I want to upgrade my computer hopefully near my birthday (March 25th) and I want to upgrade my CPU, motherboard, and maybe RAM. Problem is, I don't know what to get. I would like to stick with a DDR3 board since I don't want to spend another $60 on RAM, but I can if it's a good deal. So far I've been looking at a Pentium G4560, new motherboard, and new RAM, but would it be worth upgrading from my i5-750? What should I buy? My budget is under $150, but I can stretch it to $200. I'm in Canada, thanks!

Advance happy birthday to you :)

What is your aim on what you're going to do with your computer?

Thanks :)

I'm going to be gaming, stuff like Beamng.drive, Team Fortress 2, and maybe GTA V in the future.

I don't really see this worth it, get the supported locked i7 for the motherboard you have, you may find it cheap enough in the used market and it will be somewhat higher performance, go to Kaby Lake and DDR3 simply doesn't "match".

Save up another $150 for an upgrade.  You're just going to have to replace the parts in a few years otherwise.

An LGA 1156 i7 is going to be pretty expensive, but not give much better performance.  One of the new Pentiums is going to perform on-par with an i7 that old.

Which is basically identical to the G4560 in terms of performance.  A label isn't everything.

Lol, comparing a 4790K to an i7-870 is truly ridiculous.  It's well over twice as powerful.

So?  That's just one aspect.  A Pentium can out-perform an i7 despite the core/thread difference.

I know.  I wasn't recommending the G4560 as a gaming CPU.  Nor would I recommend the i7-870.

I know you want an upgrade now, but the best thing to do is wait it out and save up for something better.  You could also buy the parts at different times.  Just watch sales.

my first budget build was the g3258, overclocked to 4.1 on air plays gta well on medium settings. but thats about all it can do. if you really want to save money, watch Linus' scrapyard wars videos. some really good information out there on the interwebz. just depends on what kind of budget you really have and what you are looking to do with your machine (i know you said gaming).

ultimately i would say anything quad core is great especially if it can be overclocked. The new pentiums look good on paper and in those videos but youll only get a couple years out of it before looking for another upgrade

The best advice I can give you is that you find a second hand LGA 1155 motherboard and find a second hand i7 3770. If you want to spend a little bit more find a second hand LGA 1150 motherboard and find a second hand i7 4770.

This.  You'll probably have to save up a little money first though.

In the same generation, Pentium<i3<i5<i7, but there is a lot of overlap between generations.  Nothing in the first generation of the core series is going to match a modern CPU.
