Check disk on startup, please help

I was reseating my ram and I was using the power supply button to shut off my computer. Now when I booted it, it said "checking disk for errors" and shortly after "attempting repair". Did I break something? How long will this take?

Depends on the depth of the scan, few hours usually. The OS would of started to load and not been able to when you switched off the system, thinking it was a failed boot (maybe multiple failed boot) it'll want to run a disc check to make sure thee hasn't been data loss.

 

Usually if it finds a fault its in the data written being garbled, not a hardware malfunction. I wouldn't worry about it, wait till its over start the system and maybe check the smart stats for some peace of mind.
