So I've decided to upgrade from my old FX8350 to an I7. After watching LTT videos on Mobos and 6700k vs 7700k I've been going around and around with what i want to get and if its the best option. I know the 6800k is an option but havent looked into it too much. I already have the GPU, case, PSU, and AIO cooler and i have large storage. so the problem and what I want to ask you all is what do you think of my list and do you have anything better?

Id like to get a m.2 drive for the OS and I already have a 2 TB drive and a 250 gb sata SSD. Im completely open to suggestions and budget wise i just need to keep it under 1000 USD

so what are your thoughts?

why would you suggest that? value for the performance?

Cheaper, and perfect for what you need. You don't need the i7 tbh unless your doing video editing, rendering, or 3D work. For gaming that i5 will do you just fine and will save you 100-200 dollars

i mean the 6 core

Still, you won't need it. The 6800k is overkill for gaming. Most games use 4 cores, even if they use 6 cores in the future, your i5 will still be relevant. It should last you around 5 years give or take a few years

I would but do they have a timeline and do you think it will even be worth while?

End of February is potential

It should be very competitive, even if it's not as fast as Kaby Lake or hitting 5ghz, AMD will most likely offer more cores/threads for less money, helped by having a single AM4 platform, rather than intel having 1151 and 2011-3

It's likely that you'll get at least 6 cores/12 threads for the price of the 7700K

But can't I get all of that with the 6800k? Right now while the mobo would be cheaper?

the AM4 motherboard is bound to be cheaper since it's a unified platform, probably saving you like $100 minimum, putting that towards the CPU means $400 to spend on your CPU

if the lower end Ryzen 8 core/16 thread CPU ends up being $499, you're within shooting distance to get a better CPU overall
