non k i3 overclocking

i was wondering how can i safely overclock my i3-4160 without having to reset cmos. everytime i increase my core clock a little bit i have to reset my cmos to even get a post. do i have to increase my voltage? all i was doing is putting the core clock up. my specs are in my signature. also is there an easier way to reset without removing my gpu to get to the battery? my mobo didnt come with a header to put on the reset pins so will an ide hard drive header work on the motherboard?

The only you can do is modify the baseclock and try raising the voltage however it's not recommended to do base overclocking since it affects everything else in the system unless you have the new generation which has certain components further isolated.

do you know an easier way to reset the cmos if i mess up?

Some boards have a reset cmos button if not you can easily short the jumper pins, as long as they are the right sized jumper it will work.

how can i short them? can i use an ide drive jumper thingy?

If your talking about theses yes, if you didn't have them it would be the same as shorting your power switch to turn on your system.

do i hold the screwdriver against both pins while powering on my system?

It depends on the motherboard, best to check the manual, some just require it to be shorted for about 5 sec. and the board will be reset as such without powering.

You might be able to do it but if you just add voltage and hope for stable clocks your going to kill your cpu, On your cpu it sounds like you cant get a overclock at stock voltage witch seems to already be heading to bad place (personally when i have overclocked i was able to get a decent oc before even changing the voltage) if you want to overclock you probably should buy a k edition cpu that would fit in your mobo socket as it dose not sound like you will get any stable overclocking on your chip, if your willing to go 2nd hand then you could do this quite cheaply. Though i have never tried overclocking a non K cpu.

Have you tried overclocking your gpu? it will give you better performance than overclocking your cpu and in a haswell i3 + 750ti setup your i3 surely isnt the one holding you back. What games are you trying to play and what setting are you going for and at what resoultion?

i overclocked my gpu but it didnt really do much. it is already overclock out of the box, i just added a little bit to it
