backup utilities

What backup software is best used? I haven't been able to find any that can meet my needs, which specifically are just for every now and then a backup to be overwritten onto my external hard drive.

I use Windows 8 File History set to my HDD (I have an SSD where my data is). It does backups hourly. This is great as not only I have a backup, but also can go back in time on my files and folders. You can set it to use an external drive or network computer running Windows.

If you have Windows 7, check out the built-in backup feature.

However the above is just for a normal backup. For a proper extensive backup I have no software, I just do it by hand, where I transfer my stuff to my external HDD (connected vis eSATA for crazy fast speeds (same performance as internal SATA inside the computer).
