Hey, guys so I really want to start playing video games again but I'm having trouble. I recently found a gtx 560ti, a evga nforce 680i sli motherboard, a core 2 duo, and a case. I know this is really old computer hardware but I don't want to wait to save for a brand new build. I was wondering if I could buy a h110m motherboard, a corsair cx500, and use the core 2 duo e8500 and 560ti with an ssd together? Just to get started. Later on I'm planning to get a gtx 1060 or 1070 and upgrading to a core i5 6500. What do you guys think? if it helps, I'll be using a stick of 8gb ddr4 as well.

That won't work. That Core 2 Duo won't be compatible with the H110M motherboard because they both use different sockets. Plus, if you're planning to upgrade in the future to a GTX 1060/1070, you're going to want a better power supply than the CX500.

Honestly, I would just try to be as patient as possible and save up for a brand new build.

Hi,

it would be better to save and wait until after Ryzen comes out.

The Core 2 Duo will not work on a H110M motherboard. Neither will DDR4.

Keep your current board and see if you can use the LGA771 modded Xeons or a Q6600 for some extra performance

I have this board in mind and it says it will support ddr4 ram. are you talking about something else or am I missing something?

Okay.. the CPU is LGA 775, meaning that there are 775 contacts on the bottom of the processor to contact with pins on the motherboard. The H110M motherboard uses processors that are LGA 1151, meaning that it has 1151 pins. This doesn't add up, huh?

idk

yes I agree, sorry I don't know much about it but I just figured it out.

I'm learning as I go. Thank you for clarifying that.

it's okay, we all need to learn something.

you can push the shit out of lga 775 through two choices -

quad core q6600 (quick and cheap): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-2-Quad-CPU-Q6600-2-4GHz-8M-1066-LGA775-SLACR-SL9UM-/172496111251?hash=item282991c693:g:oAYAAOSwv0tU9Xj6

xeon x5460 (faster, as cheap, but requires you to mod it to work on your motherboard): http://www.ebay.com/itm/QTY-1x-Intel-Xeon-CPU-Quad-Core-X5460-3-16Ghz-12MB-1333Mhz-LGA771-SLBBA-/162336172495?hash=item25cbfd69cf:g:ihwAAOSw44BYY1k9

mod sticker (apply it to CPU, look it up)http://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-adapters-LGA-771-to-775-Xeon-to-Core-2-QUAD-cpu-mod-Q6600-Q9450-Q9300-QX965-/161574159828?hash=item259e9205d4:g:YGwAAOxy0zhTLHcA:

the DDR4 and the H110 work together but NEITHER can be used with your older processor, they physically don't FIT together. to "upgrade" this system it has to be done in 2 stages.

Stage 1: Replace CPU, RAM AND Motherboard

Stage 2: Replace video Card

you'll also want to do things in that order and NOT do the video card first as that system would severly bottleneck a modern video card.

I would like to get as much out of the components I have but I'm missing a power supply and a hard drive. I don't know what kind of hard drive or if I can get an ssd to connect to the old motherboard do I need? the processor choice would be one of your recommendations.

Good quality PSU, would take literally every upgrade you need it to. I've had it for 3 years in my personal machine, and it's very good.

Just find a used HDD somewhere, you should be fine for 6 months or so.

idk
