I'm going to be building a custom pc later on this year, closer to school year start (summer, late spring). Going to have a rig at home and a simple laptop for school. Should I just build it now with a 1080, or wait for the new series GTX (20 series or 11 series?) to release?

Either would be fine. I would build the "base" and work from there.

1080Ti is gunna be too expensive for my budget. im debating between a 2k and 4k monitor. im leaning towards 2k due to cost.

What is your definition of "2K" as it isn't really a set resolution. 2560x1440 != 2K (neither is 4K but most people accept it as 3840x2160 although that is UHD and not 'real' 4K)

my definition of 2k is 1440p lol. I'm not sure if i should go for UHD tho. im still debating between the two since i have time.

I would suggest 1440@75 or higher ultrawide. The added width is good for most games and the performance hit isn't bad.

im also going to be using it as a half workstation though, since im going into mechanical engineering, i will need to do 3d modeling and stuff. just thought i'd throw that in there.

Ultrawide monitors are excellent for workstation tasks. More horizontal screen space lets you have multiple programs side by side. CAD and software development (I'm getting into the latter) really benefit from this.

 

Once you go ultrawide, you really can't go back. Especially with gaming. The added space really adds to immersion.
