extreme ares 2 mini build

Simenr2812

I have planned a pretty nice mini itx build and i wonder if everything will work nice together (bottlenecks etc.) my main consern is power supply while it is only 860w, but if you know any bigger 160mm psu let me know;)

case: bitfenix prodigy

mb: asus p8z77-i deluxe (what is the difference between wd and non wd???)

cpu: intel 3770k

ram: corsair dominator platinum 1866mhz 2x8gb

psu: corsair ax 860i

cooling: corsair h100i

1tb hdd and kingston hyperx 240gb ssd

and to top it all of one of the asus ARES II

Just going to out this out there; you can't run a dual GPU setup in the Prodigy or any mini ITX board as there is only one PCI slot. You won't be able to fit that lot in their either with a 240mm radiator and 2 120mm radiators.

So back to the drawing board; did you want the craziness of basically quad 7970's or a mini ITX form factor?

but, the ARES II is a "7990" (two 7970 on a single PCIe x16 :))

  • AMD 7850 - 2GB GDDR5 256bits
  • gBANDWIDTH = 170.2 GB/s
  • gSHADERS = 1024 unified
  • gCPUoc = 1050 mhz
  • gMEMoc = 1330 mhz (x4)
  • gPIXELfillrate = 33.6 GP/s
  • gTEXTUREfillrate = 67.2 GT/s

but if you look in the front it is room for the ares and the drive bay i don't need;)

if you put the ares II rad where the 200mm fan is???

I am having problems with picture urls but this is the best i can find: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8425/7...5abda406_h.jpg[/url=http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8425/7618295724_2c5abda406_h.jpg]

From memory no it isn't. The Ares 2 uses dual 7970 Ghz edition cards. There is a difference between the normal 7970's and Ghz editions.

One other key thing I forgot and should have mentioned it earlier; the Ares 2 is a tripple slot card. It will not fit in a mini ITX case.

Good point

still, we can mod the case to make it fix ;D

but yea (still, it be fun build it, with a mod mini ITX case)

  • AMD 7850 - 2GB GDDR5 256bits
  • gBANDWIDTH = 170.2 GB/s
  • gSHADERS = 1024 unified
  • gCPUoc = 1050 mhz

You wouldn't be able to - you'd have either all the IO ports on the motherboard to contend with or the structural integrity of the side panel to worry about.

keep in mind that the ARES II is not just long and 3 slots

it is also "more high" that normal

  • AMD 7850 - 2GB GDDR5 256bits
  • gBANDWIDTH = 170.2 GB/s
  • gSHADERS = 1024 unified
  • gCPUoc = 1050 mhz

So now that we've gotten past the fact that you can't have your cake and eat it too, which did you want? An Prodigy form factor or an Ares 2? :P

Won't work with a H100i - you won't get the radiator in and even if you did, with the Ares rad on top, the H100 would be near useless.

You won't get the water cooling tube out of the card. The H100 is blocking it.

that is what i am afraid of, but when it comes to hardware alone what is the bottleneck???

No bottlenecks. You could drop to a AX760i if you wanted to save money.

i think i would stick to the 860 just for safety and then we will see if it all fits:)

one thing to keep in mind to, is that the case it is a bit mod

(the 2 slots whas mod to be a 3 slots just a bit)

  • AMD 7850 - 2GB GDDR5 256bits
  • gBANDWIDTH = 170.2 GB/s
  • gSHADERS = 1024 unified
  • gCPUoc = 1050 mhz
