So before I forget (lose my memory), the facts/assumptions are as follows.

1. Supposing I can find and by the 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-4266MHz Trident .  Assume I have this motherboard :) which has 4 slots so I can get 32GB 4x8GB.  Linus discusses the memory on this board at 6:08 .

2. Or buy 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-3000Mhz memory.

5. the 7700K only supports Dual channel memory.

 

Given this information and that I'm trying to get the best performance possible the following questions arise.

1. 4 DIMMs running in dual channel are slower than 2 DIMMs in dual channel right?

2. Although the OC on the 4266 is higher, it may not perform better than the 3000 due to the channel restriction.

3. If 7700k supported 4 channels, the 4266 would definitely be faster, right?

4. Would I be better off with 4@4266 or 2@3000 on this motherboard.

 

I don't know if this has been tested anywhere, but I find it confounding as to why 7700k is only supporting dual channel as it definitely impacts bandwidth.

Generally speaking it doesn't really matter for most general use.  Just buy the fastest ram that is within your budget and looks best to you from a reputable brand and you'll be good to go.  That said I'd say 4266 is overkill, you'd probably be better off with something in the 3000 range.  But if you have the money to blow go ahead and buy the 4266 stuff if your motherboard supports it.

I agree with what you're saying.  However, I'm hoping someone can provide a technical answer that definitively educates me on the merit from a performance viewpoint.

Obviously, in bang for the buck, the 3k will win.  But it is possible that the faster memory will actually be slower due to the points I made.

1. dual channels will support 2x16 3k better than 4x8 4.23k

2. The performance evaluation should take the perspective of a very memory intensive game.
