FTTP Internet Connection UK

Okay guys so I live in Cornwall, UK which is like the countryside but I live in one of the densely populated towns (almost like a city without the cathedral) and I have FTTP (fibre to the property) from BT. I can't get Virgin here so don't try and be smart but I CAN get up to 300 mbps down and 20 mbps up (NOTE: 20 mbps down is shared across all fibre plans) but I really get 200 because I opted for the cheaper package. I have a physical fibre line coming in through the wall and into this OpenReach box that takes the connection and gives an Ethernet port which then goes into my router etc....

 

Anyway, my question is that if I already have this fibre line installed, can't I get some kind of 1gbps speed from somewhere? I don't know how it all works really but I know it's a fibre connection and I know, FOR SURE, that it's capable of doing more than a puny 200 mbps down and a pathetic 20 mbps up.

Depends on how the stuff on the other side of the fiber line is wired. If you can't buy it any faster from them, there isn't much you can do.

 

You can pay for a faster fiber line, but is probably going to be 100,000+ for a new line from a new isp.

I'm fairly sure modifying tech that BT put in themselves to achieve higher speeds than you should have is illegal.

Gigabit in the UK is EXPENSIVE. It's generally reserved for businesses and costs thousands for a contract. You can call your ISP and see what plans they can offer, but most ISPs in the UK don't go over 300Mbps.

That's not what he's suggesting. He wants to know what providers can provide 1Gbps over the existing line in.

you need a commercial/business plan. it is achievable but prob not affordable. Theres actually a town in NZ where they are offering gigabit speed to residential customers, so unless you want to move to Dunedin you have to pay a lot of money
