HDMI source to VGA monitor

So I brought a Belkin HDMI to VGA adapter a while back in hopes to plug in an old CRT I got for a build project of mine. And of course, I didn't do my homework before I brought it. So now here I am, turning on my finished build, and I get a broken mess of a picture on the CRT. (Hope you like the retro/modern computer combo setup I have going on. :D)

I plugged the CRT into a laptop VGA and everything checks out. After Googling, I found out that HDMI to VGA only works on passive adapters? Both monitors are plugged into my GTX 980 with the CRT using the adapter to go into HDMI and the secondary display going straight to DVI. So I guess I can't use the CRT as an additional display (at least not with HDMI). Any ideas on how to make this work? If not, the only other ports I have on my 980 are DisplayPort and DVI-I. :/

I have a passive hdmi to vga adapter that works perfectly. :/ Passive means it requires no power right?

Wait nvm you liked to the one I have. I thought it was passive. Sorry.

HDMI doesn't have the signals for VGA. You'd have to get an active adapter like https://www.amazon.com/Rankie-Gold-Plated-Active-Adapter-Converter/dp/B00ZMV7RL2

I'm not sure if this makes a difference, but the monitor is from 1994 and uses SVGA. Also, is there an easy way to identify passive adapters when I buy more in the future?
