Does anyone know the exact cause of icons going blank?

so, say i shut down my computer, and when i turn it back on, an icon that was displaying fine on my desktop suddenly appear as blank, I know it is only annoying but i would like to actually know what goes on when this happens, does anyone have an idea? could there be multiple causes?

This problem has been plaguing me for a while. The only solution I've found so far is to delete the shortcut and get a new one.

You probably need to rebuild your icon cache.

yes exactly, why does this happen? i know the solution to it, as dalek said, rebuild icon cache, but anybody have a clue as to why this happens?
